Different Placenta Positions That Are Common In Pregnancy

Posterior Placenta

 

When the placenta attaches itself to grow on the back of the uterine wall, it is known as the posterior placenta. This is the most common position as a fertilized egg normally attaches itself to the back of the uterine wall.

Anterior Placenta

Fundal Placenta

Lateral Placenta

 

The placenta can implant itself on the lateral wall of the uterus. It can either be on the right side or the left side of the womb. This position is known as the lateral placenta.

Placenta Previa 

 

Also known as low lying placenta it grows towards the lower end of the uterus or towards the cervix. This position can lead to many complications in pregnancy and should be detected early on in the pregnancy with the help of a 4D baby scan.

Unless the placenta is in the low lying position there aren’t any big complications regarding pregnancy. The other positions which are anterior, posterior, fundal, and lateral are all common and normal harmless positions for the growth of your baby. On the other hand, placenta previa can lead to premature labor or internal bleeding due to premature detachment of the placenta.

In such a case you might also have to have a C-section delivery as often the placenta previa restricts a normal, vaginal delivery as it blocks the cervix. A good 4D baby scan clinic will do a periodical ultrasound test during pregnancy to determine the position of the placenta so that the doctors know of any possible complications.
